In the middle of the province of Limburg you will find the white town of Thorn in the municipality of Maasgouw. When you enter this world of white houses and lovely streets, paved with original Maas cobblestones, you feel as if you have momentarily entered another world. Due to the whitewashed houses and many monuments in the historic center of the city, which has approximately 2,600 inhabitants, this place is of course very popular with tourists and artists.
The white town of Thorn
Thorn owes its name “the white town” to the fact that after it grew into a small principality it fell into the hands of the French in 1794, who introduced a tax based on the size of the windows. As a result, the poor population bricked up a number of windows to limit the amount of the tax bill. The houses were then whitewashed to hide these construction traces.
Authentic Character
Today, residents maintain the maintenance of their homes themselves, only now with white paint instead of lime. As a result, the authentic character of the city is preserved and it occasionally feels as if you are still walking in the 18th century.
The Historical Center
At the tourist office on the square you can get information, fun (city) walks and cycling routes or a nice souvenir of your visit to the town of Thorn.
Abbey Church of St. Michael's Church
A visit to Thorn is not possible without visiting the beautiful old abbey church “St. Michael's Church”, the oldest part of which dates from the 10th century. It is not without reason that this church is in the top 100 of national monuments in the Netherlands.
Food and Drink
After visiting all the beautiful monumental white buildings, the historic (narrow) streets and the old abbey church, you can enjoy delicious food and drinks at various places in the city center, including at the Pannekoekenbakker Thorn on Bogenstraat.
Accommodations in the Area
So if you are in the area, don't miss a visit to this “white town”, because it is really worth it!! There are spacious parking spaces on the edge of Thorn for a daily rate of a few euros.
