Along hop and lift
Between the futuristic bridges and impressive skyscrapers there are plenty of memories of a compelling past. From the Oostpoort in Delft to the windmills in Kinderdijk. Your South Holland highlights start in Gouda. After a city walk you cycle to Leiden and The Hague. The Haagse Hopje was founded at Lange Voorhout 92 (see box). The statue of William of Orange stands in front of the palace (now a museum) on this avenue.
From murder to mills
In Delft you can view the bullet holes left behind after his murder in the Prinsenhof. Two bullets pierced his body and penetrated the wall behind him. Well, that visit really turns up. So in good spirits you cycle on to Rotterdam, where the symphony of hard work sounds. The Erasmus Bridge (De Zwaan) is impressive as a modern counterpart to the Hef, the old railway bridge that is now an industrial monument. This is followed by highlights such as the windmills of Kinderdijk, the silver city of Schoonhoven, the syrup waffles in the cheese city of Gouda and the watery nature reserve around Nieuwkoop.
