On a beautiful cycle path along the Flakke and Aldegeaster Bracken you ride to IJlst, traditionally a town of woodworking and shipbuilding. A remnant of this is the De Rat sawmill, which is still in full operation. Sneek is close to IJlst. This city, which emerged from two mounds located close to each other, was surrounded by ramparts and moats in the 16th century. It became the best defended city in Friesland and grew into a market town. The showpiece of the city is the water gate from 1613. You cycle back to Workum along many canals and ditches.
